Appomattox

Appomattox is a town, a county and a river in Virginia, United States. The town was previously known as Appomattox Courthouse and is famous as the location of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, thus ending the American Civil War.

In 1990 there were 11,971 residents reported for Appomattox County while the Town of Appomattox had 1703 residents.

The Appomattox river named after the Appamatucks Indians.

The town was originally called Clover Hill but the name was changed in the early 1860's to Appomattox Court House. This was the state custom at that time for naming county seats.
