Damon Knight

Damon Knight (September 19, 1922-April 15, 2002) was a science fiction fan, writer, and editor. His first story was published in 1941. At that time, he was living in New York, and was a member of the influential fans and writers group, the Futurians - one of his short stories describes paranormal disruption of a science fiction fan group, and has cameo appearances of most of the Futurians under slightly disguised names.

As editor of the Orbit series of anthologies, he discovered writers such as R. A. Lafferty and Gene Wolfe. Together with his wife Kate Wilhelm[?], he founded the Milford Science fiction conference, and its offshoot, the Clarion Writers Workshop.

His classic fiction includes the short story "To Serve Man".

Knight was founder and first president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA).
