Evart, Michigan

Evart is a city located in Osceola County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,738.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.3 km² (2.0 mi²). 5.2 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.96% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,738 people, 699 households, and 452 families residing in the city. The population density is 333.9/km² (866.8/mi²). There are 794 housing units at an average density of 152.5/km² (396.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.61% White, 0.52% African American, 0.98% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 1.38% from two or more races. 1.27% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 699 households out of which 34.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% are married couples living together, 17.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% are non-families. 31.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 81.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $23,348, and the median income for a family is $28,100. Males have a median income of $26,105 versus $20,063 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,691. 24.8% of the population and 18.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 32.0% are under the age of 18 and 15.5% are 65 or older.

Recreation and Tourism

The Muskegon River flows through the city of Evart and is a major source of recreation in the summer months, providing an environment hospitable to canoeing, kayaking, swimming, fishing, and other activities.

Evart is also the home of a popular dulcimer festival that takes place during the summer.

United States Highway 10 divides Evart into northern and southern portions and is responsible for bringing a fair amount of tourism-related commerce to the city.
