Harrison County is a county located in the U.S. State of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 189,601. Its county seats are Biloxi and Gulfport6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,528 km² (976 mi²). 1,505 km² (581 mi²) of it is land and 1,023 km² (395 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 40.48% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 189,601 people, 71,538 households, and 48,574 families residing in the county. The population density is 126/km² (326/mi²). There are 79,636 housing units at an average density of 53/km² (137/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 73.15% White, 21.09% African American, 0.45% Native American, 2.60% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 1.72% from two or more races. 2.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 71,538 households out of which 33.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.10% are married couples living together, 15.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.10% are non-families. 25.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 11.10% from 18 to 24, 30.50% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 11.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 99.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,624, and the median income for a family is $41,445. Males have a median income of $29,867 versus $22,030 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,024. 14.60% of the population and 11.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 20.70% are under the age of 18 and 11.30% are 65 or older.
