Luis A. Ferre

Luis Antonio Ferre,(1905-) more commonly known by the people of Puerto Rico as Luis A. Ferre, was Puerto Rico's first Governor to be a member of the PNP or New Progressive Party. He also was the founder of this party.

Ferre governed from 1968 to 1972, an era of great economic development for the island. He remains a very popular figure in Puerto Rico.

Ferre is also a talented pianist who has recorded various albums of his piano music. His dedication to the world of arts led him to open a museum of art in Ponce, which is now one of the biggest tourist attractions Ponce has, and is named after him. Also named after him is the freeway that crosses the island from North to South, going from San Juan to Ponce. As a musician and former Governor, Ferre remains accessible to his fans and he likes to sign autographs when the opportunity to do so comes.

Ferre's family fortune is estimated at 193 million dollars, and his son is the owner of El Nuevo Dia newspapers. His sister was the equally legendary Sor Isolina Ferre, a catholic nun who opened many charities and public services in Puerto Rico.
