The
Penn Central Railroad was an
American railroad company that existed from 1968 to 1976. Formed by the merger of the
Pennsylvania Railroad[?] and the
New York Central Railroad[?], with the addition of the
New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad[?] at the end of 1968, it went bankrupt two years later. In 1976 it was one of the six bankrupt East Coast railroads whose rail assets were merged by the federal government into
CONRAIL. The successor to its non-rail assets is
American Financial Group[?].
Corporate headquarters were located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
