The largest Swedish town north of Uppsala (which is 70 km north of Stockholm) with about 100,000 inhabitants. Sometimes referred to as the regional centre of Northern Sweden (Norrland). Has a University with about 25,000 students and a large hospital that serves Norrland.
Since the decision to build a university in the mid 60s Umeå has grown from about 50,000 inhabitants to today's c. 100,000. The expansion continues till this day and has made Umeå a modern, somewhat intellectual town because of the University in comparison to the more industrial ones of its surrounding. Notable is that Umeå has one of highest rates of Internet usage in Sweden.
